Designing for Access in Education

// Project Overview

My journey from graphic designer to educator revealed a critical gap in the classroom: the need for design strategies that support all students, particularly those with learning differences or who are learning English. Recognizing that the design principles mandatory in professional settings were equally essential in education, I set out to bridge this gap. This led to the development of a series of projects and initiatives aimed at training educators on how to create student-facing materials that are both accessible and inclusive.

// My Role

In this series of projects, I have served as the primary designer, educator, and advocate for inclusive design in education. My role involved everything from conducting research and developing training content to delivering presentations and creating an online course. I have worked to ensure that the principles of accessible design are not only understood but also embraced by educators worldwide.

// The Problem

In the classroom, traditional educational materials often fail to meet the diverse needs of students, particularly those with disabilities or language barriers. The challenge was to introduce and integrate design principles into educational practices, ensuring that all students have equitable access to learning. The goal was to empower educators with the knowledge and tools to create materials that remove barriers to learning and foster an inclusive environment.

// The Approach

Drawing on my expertise in graphic design, I began by conducting training sessions for educators, focusing on the effective use of design in creating accessible classroom materials. My approach was rooted in practical strategies that could be easily implemented in everyday teaching. This work gained recognition, leading to my participation in the Google Certified Innovators program in 2019, where I further honed my skills and expanded my impact. Over time, I continued to develop and share these strategies, speaking at events, participating in podcasts, and eventually creating an online course dedicated to inclusive design in education.

// The Solution

The culmination of this work is a comprehensive series of training sessions, talks, and an online course that equips educators with the tools they need to design materials that cater to the diverse needs of their students. These resources emphasize the importance of inclusive design, offering practical solutions for creating materials that are visually clear, culturally responsive, and accessible to all learners. By integrating these design principles into their teaching, educators can better support students with learning differences and those who are English Language Learners.

// The Impact

This series of projects has had a significant impact on educators and students alike. Educators who have participated in the training sessions and course have reported a greater understanding of how to create inclusive materials and have seen positive changes in student engagement and comprehension. The message of inclusive design has resonated widely, leading to invitations to speak at various educational events and to share these strategies on podcasts, further spreading the importance of designing for access in education.
